Is SAP Business One a good solution to start a business with? Isn’t SAP for big companies?

SAP Business One is specifically designed for small to midsize businesses. It’s not the same SAP used by fortune 1000 companies!
Most companies will start out with something like QuickBooks to manage the business. Don’t get me wrong, QuickBooks is a great little solution. But it’s simply a Band-Aid to manage the accounting needs. I call QuickBooks a Band-Aid solution because it is not GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) compliant. Then you realize we also need CRM (Customer Relationship Management) so we can start building our revenue streams and move from pre-revenue to actual sales. So another Band-Aid is added to support the CRM requirements. This might be SalesForce.com, vTiger, SugarCRM, etc… Now you are managing two separate solution, two separate technologies, two separate bills to pay. Additionally, the communication between CRM and QuickBooks is questionable, and an additional expense. Now comes the need for material management. There are items you purchase to resell, or raw materials needed for assembly, production, etc. So you add a third Band-Aid called FishBowl. By the time you’re actually generating revenue, you now have a requirement for a full time IT person, 3 or more solutions to support, and a lot of double data entry going on due to lack of adequate synchronization between applications. Oh, and the monthly expense of supporting multiple Band-Aid solutions has now grown substantially!
The good news is, your business is taking off. That’s right, your a genius! And your business is growing. In fact, you now can easily see how your current solution of Band-Aid’s will not support your growth unless you keep adding head-count to keep up. More employees create more expenses, and can dramatically lower your profit margins. A migration to a GAAP compliant business system is more difficult when you are migrating multiple Band-Aid solutions into one. Here is the important part. Companies running an SAP solution are taken seriously. Companies who are series about their business, attract more business. Having the “Powered by SAP” logo on your website, Sales Acknowledgments and AR Invoices can move mountains. Think about it. Would you rather purchase a product from a business running QuickBooks or SAP? Less risk is associated by the SAP brand.
And then there’s that terrible word we hear from time to time called AUDIT. The cost to audit a business not operating with a GAAP compliant accounting solution can be double. That is a risk smart companies just wont take.
